Norma S. Duncan was born in 1939 in Springfield, Missouri before the end of segregation. In a fascinating oral history which is part of the “Greater Springfield Route 66 Oral History Project” she describes growing up in Springfield, and some of her experiences traveling as a young girl and later as a woman.  While she didn’t travel that much in her youth, as her father was the driver in her family and he worked six days a week, she recalls a trip they made to the state fair and to visit family.  She describes how in general  African Americans traveling by car in the 1940s and 1950s had to take many precautions such as packing food in advance and bringing basic necessities like toilet paper with them, because they were frequently denied access to restrooms and other services. It was dangerous to pull off the highway because they could encounter hostility or worse in small towns. Thus, trips required much advance planning and travelers tried to reach a safe destination before dark.  Norma also had several experiences traveling on buses where she was forced to stand up or move to the back of a bus.  In one instance, she describes how a friend stood up with her when she was asked to move, and how they were both scared of what might happen next.  Luckily, while the atmosphere on the bus remained tense, they made it back to Springfield without further incident.
